The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority works to improve the Oklahoma’s Turnpike system – approximately 606 miles of highway throughout the state. As a part of the Governor’s “Driving Forward” Program, the Muskogee Turnpike and the Coweta Toll Plaza were selected for “ground up” reconstruction to improve safety and to modernize the Toll Plaza.
The existing Coweta Toll Plaza, located just south of State Highway in Wagoner County, was constructed in 1993 and has now reached the end of its design life. Cowan Group Engineering is pleased to be selected to update the Toll Plaza to improve its operations.
Beginning in December 2015, CGE studied the existing interchange and produced an engineering report, then quickly proceeded into designing the new Toll Plaza. Under the leadership of Jeff Cowan as project manager with Sean Fairbairn and Lynelle Nichols serving as project engineers, and in conjunction with Lee Engineering and BKL Inc., the project team worked on an accelerated schedule to finish the new Toll Plaza design in four months. The new design includes modifications to the interchange at State Highway 51, new toll booths and utility buildings for OTA personnel, new electronic tolling equipment, and modifications to the nearby bridges to allow for additional future lanes. The next exciting project milestone is the beginning of construction, starting in August of 2016.
